A cast list tells you who exists. A relationship map shows who can change the story. Start with six characters connected by protection, blame, pursuit, dependency, and a truth that has not surfaced yet.

What to label

Prefer active labels such as “protects,” “lies to,” and “needs” over vague labels such as “knows.” Direction matters when feelings are not mutual.

Map the relationships at the opening.
Add the secret or debt that changes them.
Revise the map after the midpoint.
